We were very fortunate to have the opportunity the work with Mr. Tan Lea Boon (HOD of Maths) from Fuchun Secondary School, who selected 2 students ( Case Study 1 and Case Study 2) from his Secondary 1 NT (Normal Technical) class to test the effectiveness of our Maths programmes.

These 2 students were deliberately selected because they were extremely weak in Maths.

Case Study 1

Case Study 1 was a female Secondary 1 NT student who never even once passed her Maths in Primary School.
She got an ‘E’ for her Maths in PSLE. Our diagnostic test (see brick wall below) confirmed that she was extremely weak in Maths. Notice the large number of missing bricks on her brick wall.

OUR ANALYSIS

This student got off to a bad start  from Primary 2, and it became very difficult for her to understand or continue to learn Maths topics/concepts related to the earlier concepts she did not learn or understand. In subsequent years, the situation repeated itself. In other words, more bricks were not laid or missing, making it impossible for her to understand her current Maths. Her parents were unaware of the seriousness of her problem during the earlier years of her education.

OUR OBSERVATION

Tuition centres and private tutors tend to teach their students current Maths topics and sometimes even advanced topics. Their lessons are generally effective for students who have strong foundation in Maths. Unfortunately, students like this girl who had poor Maths foundation will not understand their lessons.

HOW EFFECTIVE ARE OUR MATHS PROGRAMS?

This girl was put on a 3 months’  trial with our programmes.  She started learning from the basics of each topic. Initially, she was not very confident but as time passed and she realised that the Maths lessons were easy enough for her to understand, her confidence level grew and her fear for Maths eventually disappeared.

She started to enjoy her Maths lessons and as a result,  her confidence and self -esteem grew daily.  She became more chatty, which is the result of her regained confidence and self-esteem.  She also became very motivated as she volunteered to attend lessons during the school holidays, much to the surprise of her parents and the HOD of Maths.  She always stayed beyond the 2 hours tuition time allocated to her and was often reluctant to go home.

After slightly more than 2 months of learning with  our Maths programmes, she showed remarkable improvement in her Maths.  She passed all the test papers that we prepared for her, based on the topics she did not understand prior to learning with our programmes.

Fuchun Secondary School is now using our programmes to rebuild and strengthen their students’ Maths foundation.  We are very certain that our programmes will raise the standard of Maths of Fuchun Secondary School like they did to those students in Case Studies 1, 2 and 3.

Case Study 2

Case Study 2 was a male Secondary 1 NT student who never even once passed his Maths in Primary School. His Maths grade for PSLE was ‘Band 4′ (EM3). Our diagnostic test (see brick wall below) confirmed that he was extremely weak in Maths. Notice the large number of missing bricks on his brick wall. This boy lacked interest in Maths; has no confidence and self-esteem.

He was more punctual and his personal appearance improved too as evidenced by his overall neatness.  He even appeared happier.  This trait was the result of his regained confidence and self-esteem.  He, like Case Study 1 ,  also became very motivated as he also volunteered to attend lessons during the school holidays, much to the surprise to his parents and the HOD of Maths.  He always stayed beyond the 2 hours tuition time allocated to him and he had to be constantly reminded  to go home.  He told us he had never enjoyed learning Maths so much before.

Case Study 3


Primary 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 Maths were used to assess the Maths proficiency of this Primary 6 student.

It is apparent that his problem started in Primary 2 when he scored 75%, which means that he did not understand 25% of the Maths syllabus for that year.  If majority of the questions in the Primary 3 exams were based on this “25%”, he would have failed badly.

As he progressed towards Primary 6, his marks got lower and lower because more topics/concepts were not learnt or understood.

When this student was in Primary 4, his parents enrolled him in tuition centres, but none of those centres could help him improve his Maths.  His parents then took the more expensive alternative and engaged private tutors for him, but the tutors also found it very difficult to teach him.  This student inevitably did badly in the PSLE.

Unfortunately, students like this one mentioned above who has poor Maths foundation will not understand the lessons.

After spending only a few sessions relearning “Fractions”, starting from the basics, with “The Maths Story”, this student fully understood “Fractions” and did very well when tested time and again on this topic. He had since then relearned other past topics, all starting from the basic.
